Provokes Again

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. – Proverbs 1:7

You may set down six ciphers – 000,000 – and they count for nothing; but if you put a five or any figure before them they all count – 5,000,000. Human knowledge alone only adds up a row of ciphers. A young man goes through his medical or law school and is graduated with honors, a learned man, but not yet a Christian. His acquirements make only a long row of ciphers. These will be elements of power if he only gets in before them something that counts. Then he gives himself to Christ, consecrates all his attainments to Him, and every one of his acquirements assumes a high value. He has written a figure before the row of ciphers, and 000,000,000 has become 6,000,000,000.

The more a man knows, the more of a man he is, if he loves, reverences, and obeys God. But this is the first thing in all true wisdom. Not to have it, is to make failure out of life; and the greater the other acquirements the greater the failure.

Catch and Release

I thought I got your point

And made it wholly mine

Observed the dangling lure

The shimmering ten-pound line.

I gulped the mouthful quick

And felt it cut inside

Got more than I had planned

Now in for quite a ride.

The hook had other plans

And some might work me ill

A smarty, no not me

A sharp and chastening pill.

That world’s a biggun yes?

And I see but a shade

And all too quickly guess

At things that Wisdom made.

What’s that… I feel a shift

And lesser now the pain

Pass on this humbling gift

And spit it out again.

Still, as one who has done due diligence on her knees, and I have recommitted to that one most critical brand of activism, I dare say that if/when the tide finally starts to turn, it will not be due to the political process, it will not be due to the marches on Washington, it will not be because of which voting block any party managed to conquer.  I believe it will be because somewhere, someone recognized that they needed to put their faith back upon the Faithful One, and direct their appeal there.  In my opinion, what difference does Vacation Bible School, Worship Service, Christmas Pageants, soup kitchens, and all the other wonderful things that many churches do, what difference will those make if we allow this nation to continue to slide into the abyss, where the mere use of the phrase “Merry Christmas” can result in someone losing their job, and where a Christian is not allowed to mention Jesus outside the doors of the church.  Not that a lot of them do anyway, but my point is, we’ve got the cart before the horse.  We’ve got priorities all backward.

Note: Wow! This is truly prophetic and most necessary. Churches please abandon your “Yay-team” attitude. You DO NOT have it all together with programs and numbers. Do you find yourself in the place of Esther, or not?

Posturing at Prayer! Enough!

I honestly believe that if just ten or twenty people would decide today, commit to a season of private dedicated fasting and prayer that is devoted to, first self-examination and personal repentance, and then, to concentrated and intentional prayer and repentance for the church as a whole and for this nation,  there are any number of potential scenarios we might avert.  It is clear right now America is very vulnerable.  That is what happens when you venture outside of obedience.  You’re on your own out there.  You distance yourself from your Divine Protector, and offend Him to boot!

Christians don’t pray nearly enough.  It took the physical ailments that God has allowed me to suffer, to get me still and prevent me being busy, busy, busy with well-intentioned “doing” so that I might learn that lesson.  And of course there is plenty that needs doing.  But I think America, for the most part, has completely lost it’s understanding of the place and I do mean the critical role which prayer has played in the inception of this nation and all things that have made her great!  I think the discipline of prayer is becoming extinct in America and in America’s churches.  It’s been replaced by vain repetitions, babbling, euphoric “experiences” and “listening into the silence” as well as just noise that attempts to pass itself off as worship.

From the Fish’s Belly

Couldn’t do as ordered

Couldn’t bear the shame

Prophesy their downfall

In Jehovah’s Name.

What if they repented?

Proved that I was wrong?

Not this prophet, never

Then their laughing song.

Hit the open waters

Running from His call

Soon my disobedience

Worked to harm them all.

Stormy waters raging

Ship was tossed and turned

They were all a-quandary

Til my folly learned.

Didn’t want to toss me

Finally they gave in

Served me to the sea god

Justly for my sin.

Barely touched the waters

Came the mighty beast

Took me in my stupor

Lesser than the least.

Am I dead or breathing?

I have been so vain

Might I plead for rescue

Speak your Word again?

Might I know your mercy

Spreads to Ninevah’s worst

Raise me from this sheol

End my guilt and thirst.

Whiteness

I have just finished reading  a novel which is a disturbing parable, a dark prophecy. Copywritten in 2004 it is the work of Nobel prize winner Jose Saramago of Portugal. The title, “Seeing”.

A torrential downpour frustrates the turnout for a municipal election in the un-named capital city of an un-named Western nation. Oddly there are no proper names in the entire book. The Prime Minister. The Cabinet Ministers, The Minister of the Interior. The Superintendent of Special Investigation. The Wife of a local eye doctor. Her loyal dog.

It is decided that the election will be re-run after seven days. The turnout is then more respectable. But to the Government’s surprise 83% of the ballots are blank. Traitorously white. The President’s staff formulate a scathing rebuke as to threats to “their beloved democracy, hardly earned by forefathers.” He promises to remove all official personnel to a neutral spot outside, and to allow the constituents, like rebellious children, to stew in  their own juices.

Surprisingly the City continues to function, and without the overwhelming lawlessness suspected by the Government inner circle.

Had someone provoked this mass statement as to the redundancy of the “public service”? The culprit or conspirators must be brought to justice!

On the day of government departure a total of 27 avenues of withdrawal are selected so as to minimize the impact of any outburst at the passing convoys. No citizens come outside. No public outcry in the early light of day. But household lights mostly turned on to better view and to assist the exodus of the policy makers. Yep, begone: no great loss. Again “whiteness”.

From the outside of the barb-wired City the Minister of the Interior begins to feel increasingly ridiculous. He orchestrates an explosion to pump up the theory of an unidentified anarchist and villain. Secret arrests and interrogations abound under the cloak of “state of siege”. The News media will do his bidding.

He appoints a task force of three to “break back into the City” and to locate a person whom he now suspects, for scanty reasons, to be the root of this horrible uprising. The scapegoat, a heroic and little known woman who was spared the plague of blindness in the City four years prior. The Superintendent is humiliated by the prospect of a wild goose chase with a foregone conclusion. Safe houses; communication code-names. A veritable spy farce. But he gets to meet the Woman and her circle of loyal friends, and finds no fault in them.

Crisis of conscience.

The final episode of “whiteness” is a storm of citizens’ pamphlets intended to reverse the harm spread by a soul-less and sold-out journalism including photographs of our heroine and followers. Will she come out of it unscathed? Will the Superintendent? Will his underlings who suspect the rest of the story?

Not gonna tell. And who orchestrated the whiteness of the “blankers”, or did anyone? And what about that massive epidemic of debilitating blindness in the recent past? White blindness.

And just one more disturbing book review. Please.
