Sally Anne

I jingle at the shoppers

I jingle while they pass

And one will drop a fiver

Into my Christmas glass

A fiver for the lonely

A loonie for the poor

A toonie for the hurting

Oh that there were much more.

They mostly miss the message

That charity must cost

Until the giving hurts us

It won’t transform the lost

It won’t relate to suffering

It lacks the scent of Christ

Who left the Halls of Glory

To pay redemption’s price.

And so I ring the Yule bells

And so I dress in red

And honour still the Christ-child

Who graced a manger-bed.
